There is no perfect time to be still, so why not start now just as you are...

I often hear people say that it is impossible to even think about meditation and stillness during a time when the world is so uncertain. We are in a time where there is continual change and meditation or being still is needed now more than ever.

I had a friend recently say to me, you wouldn’t want to be up in my head it is scary. I appreciated her truth and I believe that she is not alone, as I have felt this myself. Our thoughts can quickly spiral out of control and we can be left wondering where we go from here.

The best place to go or to be is by yourself. You might think in a time of uncertainty and isolation I already feel lonely, I don’t need to have more time by myself. I totally get that.

Taking intentional time to be by yourself does not have to be equated with loneliness or isolation. Taking time to be by yourself in complete stillness is simply creating more space. It is freeing up space in your mind for awareness and for possible freedom.

When things in the mind start to spiral out of control our first thought is to find a way of avoiding them. When we lean into the thoughts and allow space for stillness we can develop a deeper awareness for what we are experiencing. We are able to watch the thoughts and to realize that we are not required to attach to them. Our thoughts lose their power and control if we are willing to disempower them from running the show.

Starting to become aware of our thoughts is what I like to call the light bulb moment. This is the realization that we are the ones having and creating the thought and we have full awareness to what is taking place. As a result, we can then make a choice whether we want the thought to continue or we want to change it.

Changing our thoughts takes time, it is not as easy as flipping a switch. We are required to reprogram the brain.

Having a practice of stillness is just the beginning. When we show up compassionately and consistently we allow for it not to be so scary. The uncertainty in life will always be present so why not start now, just as you are.
